His Other Mother
By: Tamar & Katrina Pedersen
Seven years ago today, he came into our home
He didn't come the usual way, we still considered him our own
His birthday was just hours away, so his quiet mood seemed out of place
He was somewhere in a day dream, she could see it on his face
The next thing that she knew, he was tugging on her sleeve
He had a secret on his lips, she knew he couldn't keep
He whispered in her ear, "Someone's thinking about me."
And when she asked him who, he answered quietly:
My other mother, the one just before you
My other mother, I know she loves me too
Today he knew that she would wonder about the son she gave away
Didn't tell him I suspected, she did the same thing every day
She often thought about the day when she last held her son
But never once regretted the thing which she had done
She knew that she couldn't give him all the things that she desired
If her child would have a father, she knew this would require
Another mother, someone to give her child a home
Another mother, who'd love this baby like her own
The hardest thing she'd ever done what when she gave away her son
She gave him life but knew he'd be raised by another mother
Seven years ago today, he came into our home
But even as we celebrate somewhere a mother is alone
So wherever you may be, if you ever hear this song
I thought you'd like to know, he has remembered all along
His other mother, someday I hope we meet
His other mother, who gave him dimples on his cheeks
I just wanted to say thank you for the sacrifice you made
The day you said, "good-bye", to let him be raised by
Another Mother.
His Other Mother - About
My wife and I have a beautiful family with four children, but they didn't come easy. My wife's first pregnancy almost ended with the death of her and my first daughter. After an emergency C-section, Natasha was born, almost two months early. She spent 3 weeks in the ICU, and fortunately has pulled through without any complications.
We decided we would try adoption next time around, because we both wanted more children. Adoption can be just as much of a roller coaster, and more stressful than an actual birth. You never know when the child is coming. The phone call could come any day. After a year of waiting our first son, Kjarom, came.
Shortly after Kjarom arrived, we were surprised to learn we would have another daughter. Isn't that the way it always goes. Nadja's delivery went smoother than the first time around.
Finally, we decided we would adopt one more boy, to round out the family, and our youngest son, Kjarsten, arrived.
The story behind this song is a true experience my wife had with Kjarsten. On his seventh birthday, my wife was driving in the car with Kjarsten. He was uncharacteristically quiet that day. Finally, he blurted out, "I know someone who is thinking about me today".
Katrina figured he was going to throw out names like his grandparents, or other relatives. She was completely unprepared when she asked who, and he responded, "My Other Mother." She almost put the car in the ditch.
From that day on, Kjarsten has always been inquisitive, about his biological mother. And often asks about her. Someday we hope to meet her.
This song is dedicated to her, and all those "Other Mothers", who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you for what you gave up to make our family complete.
