Legend of the Dogwood
By: Tamar Pedersen
All nature testifies of Christ,
Each creeping thing - the stars up in the sky at night.
But if I had to choose from all of these,
My favorite testimony is from a Dogwood Tree.
Chorus:
Four petals that form a cross, like the one where his life was lost.
Each blossom in spotless white, just like the saviour they sacrificed.
Each petals tip has a small red stain,
Where in his hands and his feet the wounds remain.
And in the center a small gold crown,
For the king of creation. Let us all before him bow.
The legend says the wood used for the cross,
Came from a Dogwood Tree, which once grew straight and tall.
Today the Dogwood Tree is short and bent.
It said, they'll never use my wood to make a cross again.
Bridge:
Every Winter the leaves all die, just as Jesus laid down his life.
But then each Spring around Easter time, all the blossoms reopen,
To hail the resurrected Christ.
Let us all before him bow.
Let us all before him bow.
Legend of the Dogwood - About
When I was young, someone told me about the Legend of the Dogwood Tree, and how this tree managed to give an eloquent testimony of Christ, without saying a word. The tree bears many symbols, which tell the story of Christ's death and resurrection. Next Easter, take the time to look up close at a Dogwood blossom. I fell in love with the tree, and the story, and finally decided this song needed to be written.
